Many Cwmbran roofs were laid in the post-war building boom and have been coping quietly ever since. Age alone does not condemn a roof, and a few slipped tiles do not mean a new one. What matters is the pattern of problems. Here is how to read the signs safely and when it is time to call us. We would rather you know early than wait for a ceiling to come down.

Signs from the ground

Stand back across the road with binoculars if you have them. You are looking for tiles that sit crooked, gaps in the pattern, a sagging ridge or a dip across the slope, and moss or algae thick enough to hold water against the surface. Check the lawn and path for broken pieces. A scatter of fragments after wind usually means tiles are failing, not just slipping.

Signs at the gutter line

Look at what ends up in the gutters and downpipes. Gritty granules, flakes of tile or crumbs of old mortar suggest the covering is shedding material. Overflowing gutters with no blockage can also point to a roof edge that has dropped. Peeling paint and soft timber on fascias and soffits tell us water has been getting behind for a while. Do this after a spell of heavy rain.

Signs from inside the house

Brown rings on ceilings, damp patches near chimney breasts and a musty smell upstairs are all warnings. In the loft, torch light through the covering, wet insulation or dark staining on timbers usually means the underlay has failed. Use the hatch only, and do not walk on anything but the boards or joists.

Repair or replace

Isolated damage is repairable. Replacing a few tiles, re-bedding a ridge or renewing one flashing can buy real time, and we say so when that is the honest answer. When problems appear across several slopes, the underlay has perished or battens are weak, repeated repairs cost more and fix less. At that point a full re-roof is the better decision. We show you which applies on your roof.

Getting a proper survey

A survey tells you what you are actually dealing with. We inspect from a safe position, look at the loft timbers, and photograph the problem areas so you can see them. Houses in Pontnewydd, Llantarnam and the older parts of Two Locks often benefit from a look before winter, so call us rather than climbing up to check. Early advice avoids bigger repairs later.
