Choosing a covering is the part of a re-roof most people find hardest, because every option sounds fine in a brochure. On a typical Cwmbran estate house the choice comes down to a few practical things: how steep the roof is, what the timbers can carry, how much weather it takes, and what sits well alongside the neighbours. There is rarely a single right answer, but there is usually a clear best fit.

Concrete interlocking tiles

This is the most common answer on a house that already wears them. They are robust, available in several profiles and colours, and work on a wide range of pitches provided the manufacturer's minimum is met. The trade-off is weight and a heavier, more uniform look. On estate roofs where the street is all one tile, keeping to a similar profile is often the neatest result. We check the manufacturer's pitch limits on every job.

Natural slate

Slate gives a finer, lighter appearance and suits Welsh houses well. It is lighter than concrete per square metre of cover but needs correct fixing, headlap and underlay, and a pitch that suits the size of slate chosen. We use it where the house or the street calls for it. It is usually a step up in material and labour, so it has to earn its place.

Fibre cement slate

A fibre cement slate gives the slate look at lower weight and a more modest outlay. It is a sensible middle route for a roof whose rafters would be pushed by a full concrete tile load, or where a plain slate finish is wanted. Quality varies between products, so we specify a named, well-tested range and fix it exactly as the maker requires. It also suits terraced and semi-detached pairs well.

What narrows the choice on your roof

Before recommending anything we look at the points below. They usually rule one or two options out and leave a clear front-runner. If your house stands high on an exposed edge, such as parts of Upper Cwmbran or Thornhill, wind uplift pushes us towards stronger fixing and a heavier or better-clipped covering.

Doing the rest properly

The covering is only part of the job. Underlay, battens, ridge and hip fixings, verges and flashings decide how the roof performs when the weather turns, and those details are where poor work shows first. We talk through samples with you, show you the tile or slate in daylight against your walls, and then order once you are happy. Colour changes a lot once it is on the roof.
