A chimney in Maesteg spends a great deal of its life wet. That single fact explains most of what goes wrong with them here, and it produces one symptom that sends people looking in entirely the wrong place.
A stack is masonry — brick and mortar, both porous — standing clear of the roof and exposed on all four faces with nothing sheltering any of them. Rain does not run off it the way it runs off a roof slope. Some of it soaks in.
In a dry spell that is unimportant, because the stack dries out again between showers. In the Llynfi Valley, where prolonged rainfall is the norm rather than the exception, a stack can stay saturated for weeks at a time and never fully dry.
Everything below follows from that.
This is the one worth knowing, because people spend money on the wrong repair over it.
Water absorbed into a saturated stack can travel down through the brickwork or the flue and emerge at ceiling level inside the house — typically on or immediately beside a chimney breast, in a bedroom, appearing during or shortly after sustained rain. It looks exactly like a roof leak. Tiles get replaced, flashing gets renewed, and the stain comes back.
Position is the tell. Damp out in the middle of a ceiling is usually the covering, a valley or a flashing. Damp that hugs a chimney breast, or runs down the wall beside one, is usually the stack itself — and no work on the surrounding roof will stop it.
Two related signs point the same way: staining that is worse after several days of rain than after a single downpour, because saturation is cumulative; and a damp patch that appears in the room below an unused fireplace rather than the one below the roof damage.
A working flue draws air up through the chimney and dries it from the inside continuously. An abandoned one has nothing doing that job at all.
Maesteg has a great many stacks that have not been used since central heating arrived, and they are frequently in considerably worse condition than they look from the pavement. Where one has been capped, check that the cap is a ventilated one. Sealing a damp stack completely traps the moisture inside it and makes matters worse rather than better.
Saturation matters more in a valley for a second reason. Water in brickwork expands when it freezes, and a stack that goes into a cold night thoroughly wet is being worked on from the inside.
That is what produces spalling — brick faces flaking or blowing off — and it is why chimney deterioration in the valleys often appears to accelerate suddenly after a hard winter rather than progressing evenly. It also means a stack in poor condition going into winter is worth dealing with before it, not after.
If a pot is leaning or the stack looks out of plumb, keep the ground below clear. On a stepped terrace it can reach a neighbour's property. Tell them, and say so when you call so the job is prioritised properly.
Worth saying plainly, because the gap between what a chimney repair sounds like it should cost and what it does cost causes more friction than almost anything else in roofing.
A chimney is the one part of a roof that generally cannot be reached from a ladder. Working on a stack means standing beside it with both hands free, carrying materials up, and often working on more than one face — which means a scaffold or a tower, and on a valley-side terrace with awkward rear access that can be a substantial cost before any repointing happens.
The practical consequence is worth acting on. If scaffolding is going up for a chimney, ask what else at that level ought to be done while it is there: ridge, verge, flashings, high-level pointing, guttering. Done together they cost a fraction of what they cost as separate visits, because you are not paying for the access three times.
And equally, expect a straight answer if the honest one is that nothing else needs doing.
