Roof Moss Removal Advice — Bridgend

Can Moss Be Removed From Slate and Concrete Tile Roofs Alike in Bridgend?

Bridgend has slate on older terraces and concrete tiles on newer estates. Both can be cleared of moss, but they are not handled in the same way. This guide explains the difference.

Roofs in Bridgend are a mix. The older terraces near the centre often carry slate, while the interwar and later estates mostly have concrete tiles. Moss grows on both, but the two materials react very differently to being cleaned, so we adjust our method to suit what is actually on the roof.

Why the roof covering matters

Slate is hard and smooth but brittle, and it can crack if it is walked on carelessly or struck. Concrete tile has a coloured surface layer over a porous body, and that layer can be worn away by aggressive cleaning. Both can be cleared of moss, but the touch is different and so is the risk. Bridgend's damp, mild weather means both covering types collect moss freely, so the question comes up often.

Clearing moss from slate

On slate we use a soft, careful hand-brush approach and take extra care near edges and fixings, because old slates may have slipped nail holes or weathered pointing. Moss on slate often sits along the lap lines, and we lift it slowly rather than scraping across the slate face. We bag the moss as it comes off rather than letting it wash into the gutters below.

  • Soft brushing, never scraping across the slate face
  • Extra care at edges, hips and valleys
  • Checking for slipped, cracked or loose slates
  • Weathered pointing and flashings looked at while exposed

Clearing moss from concrete tiles

Concrete tiles have a rougher surface, so moss grips well and builds up thickly, especially in the overlaps. We hand-clear and brush it in sections, gather the debris, and avoid methods that would strip the colour layer. Once the moss is off, we look for tiles that have lifted, cracked or lost their bedding at the ridge and verge. Tiles uncovered this way often show their true state, good or bad, for the first time in years.

Why we avoid jet washing on both

High-pressure washing can drive water in under the laps on either roof, and it strips the granules and glaze from concrete tile and can damage slate. It leaves the roof looking clean for a short while but makes it less durable, so we do not recommend it on either covering. Cleaning too hard now can mean replacing tiles sooner than you need to.

Treatment and what to expect afterwards

After clearing, we apply a treatment to slow regrowth on whichever covering you have. It does not kill moss for good, and shade or trees will bring it back. On most Bridgend roofs it is worth treating the shaded slopes first and looking at them again once a few winters have passed. We tell you which slopes will return fastest so you know what to expect.

Common Questions

Is slate harder to clean than concrete tile?

It needs a lighter touch, because slate can crack or slip if it is handled roughly. Concrete tile needs care to protect its surface layer. Neither is difficult in skilled hands, but each is treated differently, and we look at the roof before deciding.

Will the colour of my concrete tiles change?

Cleaning can reveal the true tile colour beneath the moss, which may look different from what you are used to. We avoid harsh methods that would remove the surface layer, so the finish should stay as it was, only cleaner.

Can you clear moss from a mixed or patched roof?

Yes. Many Bridgend roofs have repairs in a different material. We adapt our method to each section, taking the gentlest approach on any older or weaker tiles and noting anything that needs a proper repair.
