Roof Window Supply and Fitting Across South Wales

We replace tired roof windows and fit new ones in pitched roofs across South Wales, with the flashing and weatherproofing treated as the main job rather than an afterthought.

A roof window lets daylight into a loft room, a landing or a dark top-floor space, but it also puts a hole in the one part of the house that has to stay watertight. Done well it is trouble free. Done badly it becomes a stain on the ceiling after the first hard rain.

T & T Roofing South Wales supplies and fits roof windows in tiled and slated roofs, from a straight swap of an old unit to a brand new opening. We are fully insured, we quote free with no obligation, and we cover Port Talbot, Swansea, Cardiff and the valleys.

Replacing an old roof window

Swapping a like-for-like window is the simplest job. The old sash and frame come out, the surrounding flashing is stripped, and we check the battens, the felt and the timbers around the opening before anything new goes in. Rot at the head or sill of the opening is common on older units and is dealt with at this stage, not covered over. Old openings do not always suit modern units. We measure up on site and tell you what the opening needs before ordering.

Fitting a new window in an existing roof

Putting a window where there was none means cutting through the roof covering and, usually, through at least one rafter. The rafters carry the roof, so the opening needs a properly framed trimmer above and below, fixed to suit the loads. We assess the roof structure first and talk it through with you before any work starts. Building Regulations may apply depending on what the window is for and where it sits, and we advise on that before work starts so you are not caught out later.

Loft conversions and roof windows

In a loft conversion the roof windows are often the main source of light and ventilation, and sometimes an escape route, so their size and position matter. Headroom, stair position and the slope of the roof all affect where they can go. We fit the windows and the roof-side weatherproofing. Structural changes, floor strengthening and fire safety in a conversion are separate questions that need assessing first, and we say plainly where a job goes beyond what a roofing visit can settle.

Why roof windows leak

When a roof window drips, the glass is rarely at fault. The usual causes are flashing that was cut or lapped badly, a kit that does not suit the covering, felt that was not dressed into the gutter channel,. Condensation is the other common complaint. Moisture running down the inside of the pane is often a ventilation and insulation matter in the room, not a leak. It is worth telling the two apart before anyone pays for a new window that will behave exactly the same.

  • Water staining on the ceiling around the frame, not below the glass
  • Damp patches in the reveal beside the window
  • Condensation that clears during a dry, warm day
  • Rotten or soft timber visible inside the opening

Flashing for tiles and slate

A roof window is sealed to the roof by a flashing kit made for the covering it sits in. Plain tiles, interlocking tiles and slate all lie differently, so each needs its own kit and its own way of overlapping the surrounding courses. A slate kit forced onto a profiled tile roof will not shed water properly. We choose the kit to match your roof and weave it into the existing covering, with soakers and lead where the roof calls for them.

What is not included

We fit the window, flashing and the internal lining at the opening. Blinds and curtains are not part of what we supply, so those are best chosen separately once the window is in and you know how the room feels. For a firm price, we visit, look at the roof from inside and out, and give a free no-obligation quotation.

VELUX Window Installers — Common Questions

Can you fit a roof window in any pitched roof?

Most pitched roofs can take one, but the pitch, the rafter layout and the covering all matter. We look at the structure inside the loft first and tell you if the position you want needs changing or extra framing.

Do roof windows need Building Regulations sign-off?

It depends on the job. A like-for-like swap is often straightforward, while a new opening or a loft conversion may involve Building Regulations. We assess the work first and advise before it starts, so you know what applies.

Why does my roof window drip when it rains?

Water at a roof window usually comes from the flashing, the felt around the frame or the way the unit was installed, not from the glass. We inspect the surround and trace the actual path of the water.

Is the dampness inside my window a leak or condensation?

Moisture on the glass that appears on cold mornings and clears later is normally condensation. Staining on the ceiling or reveals after rain points to a leak. A visit lets us tell the two apart before any parts are replaced.

Will you cover blinds as well?

No, blinds are not part of our service. We supply and fit the window, flashing and the weatherproofing around it. Once it is in, you can choose blinds to suit the room and how much light you want.
