Roof Moss Removal › Caerphilly › Guide
Roof moss and gutters are closely linked. Moss is lifted down the slope towards the eaves, and anything that is not collected on the way ends up in the gutter run. In Caerphilly, where heavy rain comes off the hills, a blocked gutter can cause problems fast, so clearing them is part of the job, not an afterthought.
Where the moss goes
We work down the slope as we brush and hand-clear, so loosened moss is carried towards the eaves in a controlled way. Much of it lands in the gutter, together with grit from the tile surface and bits of old leaf litter that had built up behind it.
Terraced streets near the castle often have narrow access and shared run-offs, so we take care that nothing spills onto paths, cars or neighbouring yards. Debris is collected and removed rather than left to wash down the drains. It does not take long to check, and it saves guesswork.
How we clear the gutters
Once the roof is done we clear each gutter run by hand, working towards the outlets, and remove the compacted material that has gathered. Old gutters on older terraces can be shallow or slightly out of line, and we note any that hold water or sag.
We then check the downpipes are running freely, because a clear gutter with a blocked pipe still overflows. Where we can, we flow water through to confirm the outlet works before we pack up and leave. We look at this on site rather than guessing from the road.
- Moss and debris lifted out by hand
- Outlets and downpipe tops cleared
- Joints and brackets looked at for movement
- Sagging or standing-water sections noted
- Water run through to confirm it drains
What blocked gutters cause
When a gutter fills, water spills over the front or backs up under the lowest tiles. On a wet hillside town like Caerphilly that can mean damp fascias, stained walls and soaked timber at the roof edge, which in time leads to rot. Every roof in the area behaves a little differently.
It also feeds the moss problem. Standing water and rotting debris create a damp strip right along the edge of the roof, ideal for new growth, so a clean gutter helps keep the lowest tile courses drier. We explain what we find in plain terms before any work starts.
Valleys, hoppers and awkward corners
Valleys collect more moss than flat slopes because water funnels into them, and a blocked valley can push water sideways under the tiles. We clear these by hand and check for splits or lifted edges once they are open. It is worth getting it looked at before the next wet spell.
Rainwater hoppers and short gutter returns on terraces and extensions are easy to miss from the ground. We look at each one, since a small blockage there can cause the same overflow as a long run of full gutter. That is the sort of detail we check on every visit.
What happens afterwards
With moss cleared and water flowing, we tell you about any gutter faults we have seen, such as loose brackets, leaking joints or cracked sections. We do not carry out repairs without agreeing them with you first. Local weather makes this more of a concern than people expect.
Please do not climb a ladder to look at your own gutters. From the ground you can spot overflow marks or green staining down a wall after rain. If you see these, call us for a proper look before the damp gets into the brickwork.

Common Questions
Do you clear the gutters as part of moss removal?
Yes. Moss comes down into the gutters as we work, so we clear them and check the downpipes before we leave. It would make little sense to clear the roof and leave the edge blocked with the same moss.
Can moss damage plastic or cast iron gutters?
Moss itself does little harm, but the weight of wet, compacted debris can pull brackets loose and cause sagging. Cast iron on older Caerphilly terraces can also corrode under constant damp. We note anything we see so you can decide what to do.
Will the gutters need replacing afterwards?
Usually not. Most gutters just need clearing. If we find cracked sections or failed joints we tell you what we see and what the options are, and nothing is replaced without your agreement. We would rather tell you straight than sell you something unnecessary.
