Roof Moss Removal Advice — Pontypridd

What Happens to the Gutters When Moss Is Cleared From a Roof in Pontypridd?

Moss does not vanish when it leaves the roof. It drops into the gutters, so clearing them is part of the job, and the state of the gutters often tells us more about the roof.

When moss comes off a roof in Pontypridd, most of it ends up in the gutters, valleys and outlets below. On the hillside terraces those gutters are often shallow and shared along a row, so a blockage in one place can overflow somewhere else. This guide explains what we do about it and what to ask.

Where the moss goes

As we brush and lift the moss, it slides down the slope and collects at the lowest point, which is the gutter. Even with care, a good amount drops over the edge, and the gutter fills with a wet, heavy mass of moss, grit and old leaves. On a steep Pontypridd terrace we plan for this before starting, so that the debris is caught and removed rather than left to settle in the outlets.

How we clear the gutters

Once the roof is clear we work along the gutters by hand, lifting the moss and silt out and bagging it. We then check that water can run freely to the outlets and that the downpipes are open, rather than assuming they are.

  • Gutter runs cleared by hand and the debris removed
  • Outlets and downpipes checked for blockages
  • Valley gutters and roof junctions cleared at the same visit
  • Joints and brackets looked at for leaks or sagging

What blocked gutters do to a roof

A blocked gutter holds water against the bottom course of tiles and the fascia. Over time that can rot timbers, push water back under the lowest tiles and send overflow down the front wall of the house. On shared terrace roofs it can also soak the wall at the party line between two houses, so a small blockage can become a damp problem next door as well.

What we look for once the roof is uncovered

Clearing the moss is also our first chance to see the tiles properly. We look for slipped, cracked or broken tiles, worn pointing and any signs that water has been getting into the gutter line for some time. We tell you what we find and what it means. If a repair is needed we say so plainly, and the decision stays with you.

Stopping it happening again

Moss returns where the roof stays damp and shaded, so we cannot promise it will never come back. A treatment after cleaning slows regrowth, and trimming back overhanging trees reduces the leaf fall that feeds the gutters. We suggest keeping an eye on the gutters from the ground, after heavy rain, and calling us if they overflow or drip at the joints.

  • Look from the ground for water spilling over the gutter edge
  • Notice stains or green growth on the wall beneath the gutter
  • Call us for a proper look rather than reaching up to clear it

Common Questions

Do you clear the gutters as part of moss removal?

Yes. Moss falls into the gutters as it is removed, so we clear the gutters, valleys and outlets in the same visit. Leaving the debris there would defeat the purpose and could cause an overflow after the next rain.

Should I clear the gutters myself afterwards?

We would rather you did not climb up or reach from a ladder. From the ground you can watch for overflow or drips, and if you see them, call us for a proper look. We have the access and equipment for the job.

Can moss damage the gutters themselves?

It can add weight and hold water, which strains brackets and joints and can make gutters sag or leak. A full gutter also overflows onto the walls below, so clearing it protects both the gutter and the wall.
