Roof Moss Removal Advice — Porthcawl

How Is Moss Removed From a Roof in Porthcawl Without Damaging the Tiles?

The tiles on a Porthcawl roof are tougher than they look, but not tough enough for a pressure lance. Here is how moss comes off by hand, and what we check once it has gone.

Moss looks soft, yet the tiles beneath it are the part that can be damaged if the job is rushed. On a roof near the sea that has already had years of wind and salt, the aim is to lift the moss off without stripping the surface or driving water under the laps. This is the method we use and why.

Why jet washing is the wrong tool

Pressure washing looks quick, but it forces water up under the tile laps and into the roof space. On concrete tiles, which are common on the 1930s and later houses around Nottage and Newton, it blasts away the coloured surface and leaves the tile rougher, so moss grips again sooner. On slate it can crack or lift the edges. We do not recommend it. Tiles on older Porthcawl roofs have often lost some of their surface already, so they have less margin than you might think.

How hand clearing and brushing works

The moss is lifted off by hand in sheets where it will come, then brushed down with stiff brushes working from the ridge downwards, so loosened material does not get pushed up under the tiles. Moss that is dry and brittle comes away more easily, which is why we pick our days. Thick, wet growth takes longer, but it protects the tile. We work in sections and avoid walking on tiles that look worn or brittle, using proper access so weight is spread and nothing is cracked underfoot.

What we clear along with the moss

Moss falling off a roof lands in the gutters and valleys, which are the places it can do most harm. We clear those as part of the job, check the downpipes can take water, and look at flashings around chimneys and abutments. Leaving it all in the gutter would only move the problem from the roof to the eaves.

  • Gutters emptied of moss, grit and tile granules
  • Valleys cleaned out so water runs freely to the gutter
  • Chimney and wall flashings checked for lifted edges
  • Downpipes tested to make sure they are not blocked

Checking the tiles once they are uncovered

Moss can hide cracked, slipped or frost-lifted tiles, and it often holds a broken tile in place just well enough to hide the damage. Once the roof is clean we look slope by slope. If tiles need replacing or refixing we show you and explain the repair before doing anything beyond what was agreed. Old nail fixings are looked at too.

Treatment and why moss returns

After clearing, a treatment goes on to slow regrowth. It is not a one-off cure. Shade, tree overhang and north-facing slopes keep a roof damp, and inland towards Pyle and Cornelly the garden trees make that worse. Cutting back branches helps. We say so honestly, because a roof that stays wet will grow moss again in time.

Common Questions

Is it safe to remove moss myself from a Porthcawl roof?

We would not advise it. Working on a roof is dangerous, and brushing or scraping at the tiles can crack them. Check from the ground for moss, blocked gutters or slipped tiles, then call us for a proper look.

Will clearing the moss make the roof leak?

Not if it is done carefully. Sometimes a roof that looked fine shows slipped or cracked tiles once the moss is off, because the moss was hiding them. That is why we check and repair before leaving.

How do I know if my tiles have been damaged by past cleaning?

Look from the ground for tiles that appear bare, rough or patchy compared with the others, or for grit and tile granules collecting in the gutters. Those are signs of a worn surface. We can assess it properly.
