Roof Moss Removal › Tonypandy › Guide
When moss comes off a roof it has to go somewhere, and without care it ends up in the gutters and downpipes. On a Tonypandy terrace, where gutters often run along a long shared frontage, a blocked run affects more than one house. Here is how we keep that from happening.
Why the gutters take the strain
Moss is a damp, crumbly mass. Brushed off, it slides down the slope and collects at the eaves, along with the grit and tile granules that were trapped beneath it. On older terraces the gutters may already be partly full of the same material, so clearing the roof without clearing the gutters simply moves the problem lower down the building, where it is harder to spot.
How we control the debris
We work from the top of the slope downwards so the loose material is gathered towards the eaves in a controlled way, where we can lift it out by hand rather than letting it wash away into the drains. Where access allows, we lay sheeting below the work so the yard, path or lane stays clean. Everything we remove goes into bags and is taken away with us when we leave.
- Work from ridge down towards the gutter line
- Lift debris out by hand, never rinse it into drains
- Protect paths, yards and lane surfaces below
- Bag and remove all waste from site
Valleys, hoppers and downpipes
Valleys carry the most water off a roof and are where moss does the most harm. We clear them fully so water has a free run to the gutter, rather than backing up under the tiles beside it. On terraces with shared hoppers and downpipes we check that water leaves freely. If a downpipe is blocked below the first bend, we will tell you so rather than guess at it from the roof.
What we look for once it is clear
With the moss gone and the gutters empty, the roof edge is properly visible. We look for sagging gutter runs, loose brackets, cracked joints and the first tile course sitting correctly over the gutter. We also check for slipped or broken tiles that the moss was hiding. Anything we find is explained and quoted separately, and nothing is done without your say-so.
What to expect afterwards
After a clear-out the gutters should run freely in the next rain, which is the simplest test. If water still overflows, there may be a fall problem or a blockage lower down the pipework. Moss will return in shaded spots in time, and so will some debris, so gutters on valley roofs are worth watching. Check from the ground, and call us rather than going up yourself.

Common Questions
Will you clear the gutters as well as the roof?
Yes, clearing the gutters and valleys is part of the job. There is little point removing moss from the slope and leaving the same material sitting in the gutter, ready to block the downpipe at the next heavy rain.
Can moss debris block neighbouring downpipes?
On shared terrace runs it can, which is why we collect debris by hand rather than rinsing it down. We bag it and take it away, and we check the outlets that serve the roof we are working on.
What if the gutters are damaged?
We will point out sagging runs, loose brackets or cracked joints once they are clear. Any gutter repair is quoted separately and only done if you ask us to carry it out for you.
