Dry Verge Systems in South Wales from T & T Roofing: no more loose mortar, a stronger roof edge
Dry Verge Systems Advice — Cwmbran

Can a Dry Verge Be Fitted to an Existing Roof in Cwmbran?

In most cases yes, a dry verge can replace failed mortar on a roof you already have. What decides it is your tile profile, the condition of the edge and what lies underneath.

Dry Verge Systems › Cwmbran › Guide

You do not have to re-roof to get a dry verge. Plenty of Cwmbran houses have a sound roof with a verge that is cracking and falling out, and retrofitting a dry system is a common repair. This guide covers what is possible, what we check and where the limits are.

Retrofitting on an existing roof

On a repair we remove the old mortar and loose verge tiles, check what lies beneath, and fit the dry verge units to the existing tiles. The rest of the roof is left alone. That keeps the disruption to the house low. It is often done gable by gable, so you can start with the worst edge. Many Cwmbran semis have just one or two gables that have failed badly.

What decides whether it will fit

The first thing is the tile profile. The dry verge unit has to suit the shape and thickness of the tile, so we identify the tile from the roof and check the maker's guidance. We confirm each of these on site before giving a price. The second is the condition of the edge: the last rafter, the battens and the undercloak must be sound enough to take fixings. If they are rotten, they need repair first.

  • Tile profile and whether a compatible unit exists
  • Condition of battens, undercloak and end rafter
  • How far the tiles overhang the gable wall
  • Whether the tiles at the edge are cracked or worn

What happens on the day

We remove the loose mortar and any broken verge tiles, clean back to a firm edge and lay the undercloak or trim where needed. Then the verge units go on, fixed mechanically along the gable. Tile-ends or caps are fixed as the system specifies. No wet mortar is used, so there is no curing time and weather matters less. We clear the debris and leave the edge tidy.

When it does not make sense

If the tiles across the whole roof are tired, a dry verge on a roof about to be replaced is money in the wrong place, and we will say so. The same goes for a roof where the battens are rotten. Being straight about this saves you paying for the wrong thing. Some older or unusual tiles do not have a matching unit. In that case we may suggest an alternative repair, and we will explain why.

Checking your verges from the ground

Look at the gable edges from the street or garden. Mortar on the path, cracks in the pointing, gaps along the edge or tiles sitting out of line are all signs. A photograph from the ground helps us plan the visit. You do not need to go on the roof for that. Tell us what you see and we will arrange a proper look at the verge and the tile it is built on.

Common Questions

Do I need a full re-roof to get a dry verge?

No. On a sound roof we can replace failed mortar and fit a dry verge on one gable or both. A re-roof just makes it easier, because the edges are open anyway. Call us and we will take a proper look at your roof.

How long does fitting a dry verge take?

A typical gable can often be done in a day, but it depends on the length of the edge and the condition underneath. We explain how long your roof will take before starting. Call us and we will take a proper look at your roof.

What if the timber under the verge is rotten?

It needs repairing first, because the units must be fixed to something solid. We check the end rafter, battens and undercloak, show you what we find and put it right before fitting. Call us and we will take a proper look at your roof.
