Dry Verge Systems in South Wales from T & T Roofing: no more loose mortar, a stronger roof edge
Dry Verge Systems Advice — Swansea

Dry Verge or Mortar: Which Suits a House in Swansea?

Both methods can close a gable edge, but they behave very differently in wind, frost and rain. Here is how to weigh dry verge against mortar for different types of Swansea house.

Houses in Swansea range from Victorian terraces stacked up the hillsides to 1930s semis and later estates on the edge of the city. The gable edge on each faces the weather in its own way. Choosing between a mortar verge and a dry one depends on the roof, the tiles and how exposed the house is.

How a mortar verge performs

A mortar verge is the traditional method, and when it is well done and the roof is sheltered it can last well. It looks right on older properties and suits traditional roof coverings. The weakness is that mortar is rigid, absorbs water and cracks, so it relies on regular repointing to stay sound. On a windy hillside gable that can mean repeat visits for what is meant to be a lasting repair.

How a dry verge performs

A dry verge is built from fixed units and trims, so the edge does not depend on bedding. It copes better with movement, resists wind lift because the tiles are fixed mechanically and keeps weather and birds out of the roof edge. It generally needs less maintenance as a result.

The trade-off is that the units must suit the tile profile. Some older or unusual tiles have no matching dry verge parts, and in that case we say so and look at other ways of making the edge secure, such as a careful traditional repair with fixings added.

  • Better resistance to wind at the roof edge.
  • No mortar to crack, shrink or wash out.
  • Closes the gap that birds and insects use.

Victorian terraces and older villas

On Victorian terraces in Brynmill or Uplands, the roofs are often slate or older clay and the look matters. A dry verge can still be used if the tiles are compatible, and a traditional mortar repair may suit when the covering is original and in good order. We check the roof first and tell you honestly which suits.

Where the roof is slate, we also look at how the edge was originally detailed, because forcing a modern unit onto a traditional edge can look wrong and sit badly against the rest of the building, so the finish matters as much as the fixing.

1930s semis and later houses

The 1930s semis in Sketty, Killay and Gorseinon usually have concrete or clay tiles with modern profiles, which tend to suit dry verge units. Many already show cracked, patched mortar at the gable. Fitting a dry verge during a repair or re-roof is often the more lasting answer for these houses.

Making the decision

Choose by exposure, tile type and what state the verge is in. A sheltered gable with sound mortar may not need changing. An exposed or already failing one probably does. Neither option fixes a roof that is failing elsewhere, and we check compatibility on site. Some work may need planning or Building Regulations checks, and we advise before work starts.

Common Questions

Is a dry verge more expensive than mortar?

We would rather not guess without seeing the roof, because the answer depends on the tile, the number of gables and the access. We will quote both options separately so that you can compare them properly side by side.

Will a dry verge look different from mortar?

Slightly. The edge is finished with a tile end or cap rather than a bed of pointed mortar, but it is made to follow the gable line neatly. We can show you the options before you decide.

Can I mix the two on one house?

It is possible, for example where one gable has failed and the other is sound. We would normally suggest the same system on matching gables for a consistent look and fixing, and we advise on site.
