EPDM Rubber Roofing › St Mellons › Guide
Many St Mellons houses have an attached or integral garage with a flat roof, and a garage is a good fit for EPDM. The roof is usually a simple shape and often small enough for a single sheet. The job follows a set order, and each stage matters for how long the finished roof keeps the water out.
Looking at the old roof and deck
We start by inspecting the existing covering and the boards under it. Garage roofs on the 1970s to 2000s estates are often boarded and felted, and the boards may be damp or soft where water has been getting in. We tell you what we find before work starts, because a sound deck is what the membrane relies on.
Stripping and repairing the deck
The old felt is stripped back to the deck. Any rotten or damaged boards are cut out and replaced, and the surface is checked for falls so water runs to the gutter. Insulation can be added at this stage if needed. The deck must be clean, dry and sound before anything is bonded to it.
- Strip the old covering back to the boards
- Replace rotten or soft boards
- Check and correct the falls to the gutter
- Add insulation where it is needed
Bonding the membrane
The EPDM sheet is cut to size, so the whole roof can be covered in one piece where size allows. Adhesive is applied to the deck and the sheet is laid and brushed down to avoid wrinkles. Fewer joints than felt means fewer places for water to enter, which is the main reason to choose it for a garage.
Weather matters too. EPDM adhesive wants a dry deck, so we pick a settled spell and cover the roof if rain is due. East Cardiff can turn damp quickly, and bonding to a wet surface is the surest way to a poor result, so we simply wait.
Edges, upstands and corners
The details finish the job. The membrane is turned up against the house wall as an upstand, and edge trims are fitted at the front and sides, with the corners folded and sealed by hand. The edge over the gutter is set so water runs off cleanly. These details take the most skill and the most time.
- Upstand against the house wall, sealed at the top
- Edge trims at the front and sides
- Corners folded and sealed by hand
Finishing and looking after it
We clear the site, check the gutter and outlets run freely, and explain how to look after the roof. Keep leaves and debris away from the edges, and call us if you see ponding or damp inside the garage. Please do not walk on the roof to check. Call us for a proper look.

Common Questions
Can EPDM go over my old garage felt?
Usually it is better to strip the old covering, so we can check and repair the boards underneath. Bonding a new membrane over damp or failing felt traps moisture and hides problems. We tell you what we find on site.
Will one sheet cover my whole garage roof?
Often yes. Most garage roofs are small enough to be covered in a single sheet, which means no joints across the main area. Larger roofs may need more than one piece, and we explain how that is handled.
How do you stop water getting in at the wall?
The membrane turns up the wall as an upstand and is sealed and protected at the top with a flashing or trim. Corners and joints at the wall are folded and sealed by hand, which is where much of the skill lies.
