Condensation between the panes of a roof window cannot be wiped away, because it is inside the sealed unit. It means the seal has failed and the gas or air gap is letting in moisture. The next question is what to do about it. Sometimes only the glass needs changing. Sometimes the whole window deserves replacing, particularly on older Barry lofts.
What misting between the panes means
A roof window has a sealed double-glazed unit. Over time the edge seal can break down, letting damp air in. The result is a cloudy or foggy look between the panes, often worse on cold mornings. It is different from condensation on the room side, which is about humidity and ventilation, not a failed unit. Light misting at first often spreads across the pane over time.
When re-glazing is enough
If the frame is sound, the flashing is tight and the window opens and closes well, replacing just the sealed unit can be sensible. The new glass goes into the existing frame, and the rest of the window stays as it is. It is usually the less disruptive route, with little work inside the room. Matching the size and type of the existing frame matters, and we check this on site first.
When the whole window should go
Sometimes the misted glass is one symptom among several. The frame may be tired, the flashing may be leaking, the hinges may be stiff, or the window may be an old model where parts are hard to match. In those cases a new window and flashing kit gives a better result than glass alone. A tired window can cost more to keep patching than to renew properly.
- Frame timber or coating in poor condition
- Flashing corroded or lifting at the edges
- Leaks or damp stains around the opening
- Window difficult to open, close or lock
- Model old enough that matching parts is awkward
The salt and weather factor in Barry
Roof windows near the seafront and Barry Island get salt, strong sun and driving rain, which age seals and metalwork quicker. That does not mean every window needs replacing, but a misted unit on an exposed Barry roof is worth a proper look at the frame and flashing, not just the glass. Windows in older Edwardian lofts in Barry are often the ones showing this wear.
How we help you decide
We look at the window from inside and from the ground, check for leaks, and look at the roof covering around it. Then we tell you plainly whether re-glazing will do or whether replacement is the better course. A replacement may need planning or Building Regulations checks, and we advise before work starts. We never push replacement if re-glazing will do the job properly.

Common Questions
Can misting between the panes be cleaned off?
No. The moisture is trapped inside the sealed unit, so cleaning the outside or inside of the glass does nothing. The unit has to be replaced, either on its own in the existing frame or as part of a new window.
Is a misted roof window leaking?
Not necessarily. Misting is a failed glass seal, not a leak through the roof. However, if there are also stains or drips, flashing or sealing could be involved too, and we check the whole window.
Will a new window mean work inside the room?
Replacing only the sealed unit usually needs little work inside. Replacing the whole window can mean new lining and some making good. We explain what is involved before we start, so there are no surprises.
