VELUX Window Installers › Bridgend › Guide
Plenty of Bridgend houses have a roof that was never designed with windows in it, from older terraces to later estate homes. Adding a VELUX or similar roof window to one of these is a routine job, but it needs to be done in the right order and with the right parts.
What decides whether it can be done
The first question is what is underneath. We need to see the rafters, check their spacing and size, and confirm there is enough clear space in the loft or room below. The second question is the roof covering, because slate, plain tile and concrete tile each need a different flashing kit. Bridgend roofs vary a great deal in age, so we never assume one house will match the next.
Fitting into an existing roof covering
We lift the tiles round the position of the new window, cut the opening, and fit the frame and flashing. The tiles are then re-laid into the flashing, trimmed where necessary. On older Bridgend roofs the tiles can be brittle, so we allow for a few replacements and tell you before we start.
- Tiles lifted around the new opening only
- Rafters trimmed and doubled up as needed
- Frame and flashing kit fitted for your covering
- Tiles re-laid neatly into the surround
What happens inside the room
Inside, the opening is lined and insulated, and the window is sealed against draughts and condensation. If the loft is unfinished, we can leave the opening ready for later decoration. If it is already a room, we work to keep dust and mess to a minimum and protect the floor and furniture. We also check the ceiling below, so any plaster or lining work is clear from the start.
Common problems on older roofs
Older roofs in Bridgend sometimes have uneven rafters, thin battens or patched tiling. None of these stops a window being fitted, but they affect how the opening is formed and how neatly the flashing sits. We note anything we find and explain how we propose to handle it.
- Uneven or undersized rafters in the loft
- Brittle or mismatched roof tiles
- Old felt or battens needing renewal
- Damp or rot found once the roof is opened
Before you decide
A roof window is a good upgrade where a room is dark or a loft is used for storage and could be better. It may need planning or Building Regulations checks — we advise before work starts. A visit lets us confirm the position, the parts needed and how the finished window will look from inside and out. Terraced houses often share a roofline, so we also look at how a window will sit beside the neighbours.

Common Questions
Will adding a window weaken my roof?
Not if the opening is formed properly. Cutting a rafter means the neighbouring ones are doubled up to carry the load around the gap. We check the timbers on site and form the opening to suit what we find.
Can I put a roof window on a front slope?
Often you can, but a front slope is more visible and may have different planning considerations. We advise before work starts and help you decide whether the back slope is the better place.
How long does fitting one window take?
A single roof window is a fairly quick job once the materials are on site, but the exact time depends on the roof covering and the structure. We give you a clear idea when we have seen the roof.
