VELUX Window Installers › Cardiff › Guide
A loft conversion lives or dies by its roof windows. They give the room light, ventilation and sometimes a way out, and they have to be fitted into a roof that is still carrying weight. In Cardiff the deep roof spaces of older terraces and the lower roofs of 1930s semis each bring their own questions.
Planning the window layout
We start with how the room will be used. A bedroom wants light and a view from a seated height, a stair landing wants light from above, and a storage room needs less. On a Victorian terrace in Pontcanna or Cathays the rear slope usually takes the windows, and we space them to suit the rafters as well as the room.
Opening up the roof
Each opening is cut with the roof protected behind it. Rafters are trimmed and doubled up, and a framed trimmer carries the load round the window. We confirm all of this on site, not from a drawing alone. The roof is kept sealed whenever we are not working, because a half-open Cardiff roof and a wet forecast do not mix.
- Rafters trimmed and doubled up round each opening.
- Framed trimmers carry the load across the gap.
- Roof covering cut back neatly to the frame.
- Opening sealed up whenever we leave site.
Flashing, sealing and the roof covering
Each window needs the flashing kit made for your roof covering, whether that is slate or concrete tile. The kit, the tile cut and the sealing at the corners are where leaks begin or are avoided. We take care over these details, because the glass is almost never the problem and the flashing almost always is.
Lining, insulation and vapour control
Inside, the opening is lined and insulated around the frame, with a vapour control layer to limit condensation. A good lining also angles the light into the room and gives a clean finish for the plasterer or decorator. This is the part people notice every day, so we leave it neat and ready for the next trade.
Working with the rest of the conversion
Roof windows are one part of a conversion, and the timing matters. We fit them when the roof can be opened safely, ahead of the plastering and flooring. The work may need planning or Building Regulations checks — we advise before work starts. We talk to your builder or designer so each trade knows what the other has done.
- Windows go in before plastering and floor finishes.
- Sizes and positions are agreed with the builder.
- Head height and escape routes are thought through.
- We tell you what each stage will look like.

Common Questions
Can I use any roof window for a loft room?
Not necessarily. The window must suit the pitch, the room use and the roof covering, and it may need to open wide enough to serve as a way out. We talk through the options and the likely positions before anything is ordered.
How long does fitting roof windows take?
It depends on how many windows there are and how awkward the roof is. We open one slope at a time and seal it up each day. We tell you what to expect before we start rather than promise a fixed time.
Will fitting the windows make a mess indoors?
Some dust and debris are normal, and the loft floor takes most of it. We protect the stairs and landing, clear up as we go and leave the room tidy for the next trade to follow on.
