VELUX Window Installers Advice — Neath

Should a Misted Roof Window in Neath Be Replaced or Re-Glazed?

A misted roof window has a failed sealed unit. Whether to replace the whole window or just the glazing depends on the frame, the age of the window and what else is wrong.

Misting between the panes means the seal around the glass has failed and moist air has got in. It is common in older roof windows, and in a damp area like Neath people often spot it first. This guide explains what misting means, how to decide between replacing and re-glazing, and what we check on site.

What misting actually means

A roof window has a sealed double-glazed unit. When the seal fails, moist air enters the gap and condenses on the cold face of the glass. It looks like fog that will not wipe off. It is not condensation on the room side, which usually clears by itself and points to damp room air.

Replace the unit or the whole window

If the frame, sashes and flashing are sound, a new sealed unit may be all that is needed. If the frame is rotten, the opening hardware is worn or the window is an old pattern that no longer matches current parts, a whole new window can be the better answer.

We look at both and explain the trade-off. A new unit in a poor frame can disappoint, while a new window where only the glass failed may be more than the job needs. The honest answer depends on what we find.

  • Frame and sash condition, including any rot or warping
  • Whether the opening mechanism and seals still work
  • Whether the flashing and surrounding roof covering are sound
  • Whether replacement units are available for that window pattern

Leaks and condensation are different problems

Misting between the panes is not a leak. A drip or damp patch around the frame points to flashing, sealing or the roof covering. Condensation on the room-side glass points to humid air or poor insulation around the lining. Each has a different fix, so we work out which one you have before suggesting any work.

What we check on site

We look at the window from inside and outside, checking the glass, the frame, the lining, the flashing and the tiles or slates around the opening. If there is damp around the frame, we look at the rafters and insulation too. We often find the glass is not the only thing that wants attention.

In Neath's older terraces the windows may have been fitted long ago, possibly with flashing that suits the roof as it was then. A replacement is a chance to put in a flashing kit that matches the roof covering properly, which is worth doing while the window is out.

Making the decision

If the frame is good and the rest of the window is sound, re-glazing can be sensible. If there are signs of damp, worn parts or an awkward old pattern, replacement tends to be the better route. Either way, we give you a plain recommendation and leave the choice to you, without pushing the bigger job.

Common Questions

Can misting be cleaned off?

No. The fog is between the panes inside a sealed unit, so cleaning the glass does nothing. The unit has to be replaced, either on its own or as part of a new window.

Does a misted window mean the roof is leaking?

Not necessarily. Misting is a failed seal in the glass. A leak shows as drips or stains around the frame. We check both, since an old window may have one problem or both.

Is it worth replacing a whole window?

If the frame is worn, the opening is stiff or the flashing is poor, a new window is usually the better outcome. If only the glass has failed, a new unit may do. We look and tell you honestly.
