VELUX Window Installers › Port Talbot › Guide
You do not need a new roof to get a roof window. Plenty of Port Talbot houses, from terraces to interwar and post-war semis, have been given one long after they were built. It does involve cutting into a working roof, so it needs doing carefully. Here is how the job runs and when we would say no.
Yes, in most cases
Most pitched roofs with a usable loft can take a VELUX or similar roof window. The pitch, the rafter layout and the covering decide whether it works and where. We look at the roof from inside and out before saying yes, because a roof window in the wrong place causes more bother than it solves.
A shallow pitch can limit the choice of window, and a very steep one can make the opening awkward to reach. We explain what suits your roof, whether that is a standard window or something different. That small piece of planning saves trouble later and means fewer surprises on the day.
How the opening is made
We strip back the covering around the position, cut the opening and trim the rafters. The opening is framed with doubled-up timbers so the load is carried round it. Only then is the window fixed. Because the roof is open during this stage, we plan the work around the weather, which on the bay can change quickly.
- Covering lifted around the opening
- Rafters trimmed and doubled up
- Frame and window fixed to the structure
- Roof protected until the flashing is done
Flashing, sealing and making it weathertight
The flashing kit is matched to your tiles or slate and fitted so water runs around the frame, not under it. This is the part that matters most for staying dry. On concrete-tiled semis around Margam and Baglan, the kit fits neatly into the interlocking profile, whereas older slate roofs need more hand-fitting.
Lining and insulation inside
Inside, we line the opening, fit insulation around the frame and seal the vapour control layer, so the window is warm and condensation stays away from the reveal. A finished lining makes the window look like it was always part of the room. Plastering or decorating is for you or a separate trade to arrange.
Insulation around the frame is not a finishing touch, it is part of keeping the room comfortable. Without it, the cold edge of the frame can cause condensation that people mistake for a leak. That small piece of planning saves trouble later and means fewer surprises on the day.
What might stop it
Rotten or crowded rafters, a very shallow pitch, a loft with no useful headroom or a roof covering past its best can all rule a window out or mean other work first. Some windows may need planning or Building Regulations checks, and we advise before work starts. If the answer is no, we say so plainly.

Common Questions
Will adding a roof window weaken my roof?
Not if it is done properly. The cut rafters are trimmed and the opening is framed with doubled-up timbers, which carry the load around the window. We check the structure on site before agreeing the position.
Can any roof covering take a roof window?
Most can, including concrete tiles, plain tiles and slate, as long as the right flashing kit is used. Very old or worn coverings may need repair first. We look at the covering before we confirm.
Is it messy to fit a roof window into an existing loft?
There is some disturbance because the roof is opened and the rafters are cut. We protect the loft and the roof during the work and clear up afterwards. Redecorating the new lining is up to you.
