VELUX Window Installers › St Mellons › Guide
In a loft conversion the roof windows are often the main source of daylight, and they have to be fitted so the roof stays weathertight. For a St Mellons house the job runs in stages, and each depends on the last. Here is what happens, in the order it happens, and what we explain at each step.
Planning the layout
We start inside the loft, looking at where the floor, stairs and main living areas will sit. Windows are placed for light, headroom and a view, and they need to line up with the rafters. Houses on the later estates round Pontprennau often have trussed roofs, so the layout is worked out around what the structure allows.
Opening up the roof
On the day we strip the tiles round the chosen position, then cut and trim the rafters. The timbers around the opening are doubled up to carry the load, and this is checked against the roof structure on site. The opening is covered and protected so the house stays dry while the window goes in.
- Strip tiles around the opening
- Trim and double up rafters as required
- Cover and protect the exposed roof space
- Check the opening square and level
Fitting the window and flashing
The window is set into the opening and fixed, and the flashing kit goes round it, matched to the roof covering. For concrete tile this is a kit for that profile. The tiles are then cut and refitted neatly to the flashing. Poor flashing is the most common reason for a leak, so this stage gets the most care.
Access inside matters as well. We put down dust sheets, protect the stairs and landing, and keep the opening covered whenever we are not working on it, so the house stays clean and dry through the process, whatever the St Mellons weather does.
Lining, insulation and vapour control
Inside, the opening is lined and insulated, and a vapour control layer is taped and sealed, so warm damp air from the room does not reach cold timber. This also helps keep condensation down. The lining is then ready for plastering or boarding by whoever is finishing the room.
- Insulation fitted tight around the frame
- Vapour control layer sealed to the lining
- Reveals left ready for plastering or boarding
Permission and finishing
A loft conversion with roof windows may need planning or Building Regulations checks, and we advise before work starts. When the windows are in, we clear the loft and the drive, and show you how they open, clean and ventilate. If you are planning a conversion, call us for a proper look at the roof.

Common Questions
How many roof windows does a loft room need?
It depends on the size of the room and the light you want. Many lofts take one or two, but the roof structure and the rafter layout also limit where they can go. We suggest positions on site.
Will fitting a roof window affect the rest of the roof?
It changes the part around the opening, where rafters are trimmed and tiles refitted to the flashing. Done properly it does not weaken the roof. We check the structure on site before cutting anything.
Do I need the room finished before the windows go in?
No. The windows are usually fitted first, so the roof is watertight before the interior work starts. We leave the reveals lined and ready for your plasterer or joiner to finish. We explain the options.
