VELUX Window Installers Advice — Tonypandy

Should a Misted Roof Window in Tonypandy Be Replaced or Re-Glazed?

Misting between the panes means the sealed unit has failed. Whether you replace the window or just the glass depends on its condition, and here is how we judge it for Tonypandy roofs.

Condensation trapped between the panes of a roof window is a common call in the damp Rhondda climate. It means the sealed glass unit has failed, but that does not automatically mean the whole window must come out. Here is how we decide between re-glazing and replacing, and what we look at first.

What misting actually means

A roof window has a sealed double-glazed unit. When the seal fails, moist air gets between the panes and condenses, leaving a permanent haze that cannot be wiped away. This is different from condensation on the room side of the glass, which comes from humidity in the room and is often a ventilation issue rather than a fault. The right answer depends on what we find on site.

When re-glazing makes sense

If the frame, the flashing and the surrounding roof are all sound, replacing only the glazed unit can be a sensible repair. It avoids disturbing the roof covering and the lining. It suits a window that is otherwise in good order, where a matching unit is available and the frame is still straight and watertight. The right answer depends on what we find on site.

  • Frame is straight, sound and opens properly
  • No sign of leaks at the flashing
  • Matching sealed unit can be sourced
  • Lining and surround are in good condition

When replacing the whole window is better

If the frame is warped, the seals are tired or the flashing is poor, new glass will not fix the underlying problem. On older Tonypandy terrace roofs, the flashing may also be badly matched to the covering. In those cases a full replacement, with a new flashing kit matched to the slate or tile, gives a sounder result than putting new glass into a tired frame.

Check for leaks before you decide

A misted pane is sometimes blamed for a leak that is really coming from the flashing, sealing or the covering around the window. The glass is rarely the source of water coming in. We look at the loft timbers and lining for staining first. If water has been getting in, replacement is usually the better answer, because the flashing needs attention anyway.

What we do on site

We inspect the window from inside and out, check the flashing and surrounding covering, and explain what we find before suggesting either option. Do not climb out to look at it yourself. If a replacement is needed, we match the new window to the flashing kit for your roof and finish the lining. A change of size may need planning or Building Regulations checks, and we advise before work starts.

Common Questions

Is a misted roof window leaking?

Not necessarily. Misting means the sealed unit has failed, which is a separate fault from a leak. But we check the flashing and lining as well, since the two problems sometimes appear together. We explain each stage of the work before the first tile is lifted.

Can the misting be cleaned off?

No. The moisture is trapped between the panes, so wiping the glass does nothing. The sealed unit has to be replaced, either on its own or as part of a whole new window. The room below is protected throughout and we leave the opening tidy.

Does a misted window need replacing straight away?

It is not urgent in itself, as the window still works, but the view and insulation suffer. Have it looked at, particularly if you notice any damp or staining around the frame. If anything on site changes the plan, we tell you before carrying on.
