Dry Verge Systems in South Wales from T & T Roofing: no more loose mortar, a stronger roof edge
Dry Verge Systems Advice — Bridgend

What Is a Dry Verge System and Does a Roof in Bridgend Need One?

A dry verge replaces the mortar along the gable edge of a roof with fixed units. We explain how it works, why it suits exposed Bridgend houses and when you can leave things as they are.

Dry Verge Systems › Bridgend › Guide

The verge is the sloping edge of a roof where it meets a gable end. On many Bridgend houses it is finished with a strip of mortar that was bedded in when the roof was built. Over time the mortar cracks and falls out, and a dry verge is the modern alternative.

What the verge does

The verge closes the gap between the last row of tiles and the gable wall. It keeps rain, wind and birds from getting under the roof edge, and it holds the edge tiles in place. Because it faces the weather directly, it takes a harder beating than most of the roof. On terraces and semis alike, the verge is also the first place a gale tries to lift.

How a dry verge system works

A dry verge uses mechanically fixed units and tile-ends or caps instead of wet mortar. The pieces are screwed or clipped to the roof structure following the tile maker's guidance, so the edge is held by fixings rather than by something that dries, shrinks and cracks. The units are made to suit particular tile profiles, which is why we choose them to match your roof.

  • Fixed verge units along the gable edge
  • Matching tile-ends or caps to finish the edge
  • No wet mortar bedding to crack or fall out
  • Edge kept closed against weather and birds

Why mortar verges fail

Mortar shrinks and cracks as it ages, and weather and frost then work into those cracks. On exposed Bridgend gables, where the wind and driving rain come from the west, pieces break away, leaving gaps at the edge. Once the bedding goes, edge tiles can loosen, and a small job becomes a larger one. Birds and insects then use those gaps to get in.

Does your Bridgend roof need one?

If your verge mortar is sound and the edge tiles are firm, there is no need to change anything. A dry verge makes sense on a new roof, a re-roof, or where the mortar has already failed. It is not a cure for a roof failing elsewhere, and we say so if we find other problems. If you are unsure, we are happy to look and give you a straight answer.

What we check before fitting one

Not every tile profile suits every verge unit, so we check the tiles on site before agreeing what to fit. We also look at the battens and gable edge beneath, because fixings need something sound to hold on to. Work at the edge of a roof may need planning or Building Regulations checks — we advise before work starts. We also check how the fixings will bear on the structure.

  • The tile profile and whether it suits the units
  • The condition of battens and timbers at the edge
  • How much mortar has already failed
  • Whether the rest of the roof is sound

Common Questions

Is a dry verge better than mortar?

For most roofs, yes. There is no wet bedding to dry out and crack, the edge is held down mechanically, and it stands up better in strong wind. It still needs a sound roof beneath, so we check that before recommending it.

Does a dry verge look different from a mortar one?

Slightly. The finished edge uses tile-ends or caps, and it can look cleaner and more even than old mortar. We choose the units to suit your tiles, so the result looks like it belongs on the house.

Will a dry verge stop my roof leaking?

Only if the leak is coming from the verge. It closes the roof edge against weather, but it cannot fix slipped tiles, failed flashings or a worn-out roof elsewhere. We look at the whole roof so you know where the water is really coming from.
