UPVC Soffit and Fascia › Caerphilly › Guide
Few things test a roofline like wet, windy weather coming off hills, and Caerphilly gets plenty of it. Boards along the eaves and gable edges are the first parts of a house to feel it. Understanding how the weather works on them helps you spot trouble early and decide what to do about it.
Rain and the slow rot behind the gutter
Rain runs off the roof into the gutter, and any gutter that overflows, leaks at a joint or sags will send water back onto the fascia. Timber soaks it up, stays damp and begins to rot from the back, often well before the paint shows anything wrong. Soffits take it from the underside when water finds its way along the eaves.
Wind-driven weather at the mountain edge
Wind pushes rain sideways into places a normal shower never reaches. Bargeboards on gable ends catch the worst, and loose or warped boards let rain, leaves and birds into the roof edge. Houses on the upper edges of the town, near Rudry, Machen or Nelson, often show this earlier than houses tucked into the valley floor.
- Rain forced into open board joints
- Loose bargeboards lifting at the gable
- Gutters knocked out of line by gusts
- Leaves and debris blown into blocked gutters
Damp air and the roof space
A roof space with no air movement holds warm, damp air that has risen from the house. In Caerphilly's damp climate that means condensation on the underside of the roof and moisture working into the rafter ends. Vented soffits and vent strips let fresh air in at the eaves, which helps the timbers stay drier from the inside.
Spotting trouble from the ground
You can usually see the signs without going near the roof. Look for peeling paint, dark stains on a board, sagging gutter lines, gaps at the joints or green growth along the eaves. If you see any of this, call us for a proper look rather than trying to reach the roofline yourself. Never climb up to inspect or scrape the boards.
- Paint peeling or bubbling along the board
- Dark streaks below a gutter joint
- Birds or insects entering at the eaves
What UPVC changes
UPVC does not soak up water, so it does not rot, and a clean with warm soapy water keeps it tidy. It is very low maintenance, though the gutters still need clearing of moss and leaves. With vented soffits and firmly fixed boards, the roofline stands up better to rain and wind. Some roofline work may need planning or Building Regulations checks — we advise before work starts.

Common Questions
Does wind damage UPVC fascias?
UPVC boards fixed properly to the rafter ends cope well with exposed weather. Problems usually come from poor fixing or old rotten timber behind them, which is why we check the rafter ends before any new boards go on.
Why are my soffits stained and dark?
Dark staining usually means water has been running onto or behind the board, often from an overflowing or leaking gutter. It can also be a sign of damp air in the roof space. We can look at the cause and tell you what is needed.
Should I clear moss from my gutters myself?
Please do not climb up to do this. Moss and leaves in gutters are best dealt with by us or by someone with proper access, as working at height is dangerous. Call us and we will take a proper look.
