UPVC Soffit and Fascia › Cwmbran › Guide
When you have the fascias replaced, the question of the gutters always comes up. They hang directly from the fascia board, so they cannot stay in place while it is changed. For most Cwmbran houses the sensible answer is to do both together, but there are cases where old gutters can go back up.
Why the gutters have to come off anyway
A gutter is held to the fascia by brackets screwed into the board. To take out the old fascia, the gutter and brackets must be removed first. That means the gutters are being handled either way, and the extra work to fit new ones is small compared with putting up a second scaffold at a later date. Doing the job twice also doubles the disruption on your drive and garden.
When old gutters can be refitted
Sound UPVC or cast gutters with clean joints and no cracks can sometimes go back up on the new board. We check for splits, sagging, failed seals and brackets that no longer grip. Even then, a refitted gutter must be set to the right fall so water runs to the downpipe and does not sit in the run.
- No cracks, splits or brittle sections
- Joints and seals still holding
- Brackets and fall can be corrected
- Colour matches the new boards
When new gutters are the better choice
On many 1950s to 1970s Cwmbran houses the original gutters are cracked, sagging or leaking at the joints. Putting them back on a brand-new fascia would mean a new board getting wet from the same faults. New gutters and downpipes, in a colour to match the boards, give the roofline a fresh start and make the job look finished. It also stops you paying twice for work on the same roofline.
What we check on site
Before we agree what to do, we look at the gutter fall, the joints, the outlets and the downpipes. We also check whether water has been running behind the gutter and onto the board or soffit. If trees overhang the roof, particularly in Greenmeadow or Henllys, we may suggest gutter guards or simply regular clearing. Never climb up to clear gutters yourself; call us for a proper look.
Fitting it all in one visit
Doing the fascias, soffits, bargeboards and gutters together means one scaffold, one set of dust and a roofline that matches from end to end. Vented soffits go in at the same time. UPVC is cleaned, not painted, and is very low maintenance. Some work may need planning or Building Regulations checks — we advise before work starts. It also means gutters, downpipes and boards all share one colour and finish.

Common Questions
Can I replace the gutters now and the fascias later?
You can, but if the fascia is already tired you would pay for scaffold twice and fit gutters onto a board you will soon remove. Doing both at once is usually neater and saves time, and the finish matches.
Do new gutters make a difference to damp problems?
A leaking gutter can soak the fascia, soffit and sometimes the wall below, so fixing it helps. New gutters set to the correct fall carry water away properly, though they will not cure every damp problem in a house.
Which gutter colours go with UPVC boards?
Most people choose black, white or grey gutters to match the boards. Black gutters look good against white or dark fascias. We can talk through the options so the whole roofline of your Cwmbran house is consistent.
