UPVC Soffit and Fascia › St Mellons › Guide
A fascia carries the gutter, so changing one almost always means taking the other off. On most St Mellons houses it makes sense to deal with both in one go. This guide explains how the two are connected, when old gutters can go back up, when new ones are the better choice, and what to ask before work begins.
Why they are linked
The gutter brackets are screwed into the fascia board, or sometimes into the rafter ends behind it. To replace the board, the gutter has to be taken down first, so the question is really whether it goes back up or is replaced. If the gutter is left until a later visit, you pay for access twice, and a gutter hung on a fresh board can end up with its fall disturbed if it is handled twice.
When old gutters can be refitted
If the gutters are sound, straight and clean, they can often be refitted to the new fascia. That suits recent estates where the plastic has not yet gone brittle and the joints still seal. We check each length for cracks, split joints and sagging, and test the fall as it goes back up. Brackets and seals are usually renewed even when the gutter itself is kept.
- Sound, straight lengths with no cracks
- Joints and seals that can be renewed
- Brackets replaced, not reused if worn
- Fall checked once fitted on site
When new gutters are the better choice
Older plastic from the 1970s and 1980s houses around Old St Mellons and Rumney can turn brittle in the sun, crack at the joints, and lose its shape. It may survive being taken down once, but not twice. Where gutters already overflow, drip at joints or sit lower at one end, we recommend new lengths, outlets and downpipe connections, so the new boards are not working with a faulty drain.
What affects the choice here
Open ground east of Cardiff means rain often arrives driven by wind, so a gutter sized or aligned badly will overshoot rather than catch. We look at the roof area feeding each gutter and the number of downpipes. Trees at some of the older, more established streets can drop leaves into the gutter, and a guard or wider run may be worth discussing. We keep it practical and explain what we would do and why.
- Wind-driven rain overshooting a shallow gutter
- Leaf fall near mature gardens
- Roof area feeding each length
- Number and position of downpipes
What to ask before work begins
Ask whether the quote includes refitting or replacing gutters, whether downpipes are included, and how long the scaffold will be up. Ask what happens if rotten rafter ends are found once the old boards are off. A fair answer will name what is checked and what is decided on site. We would rather explain a possible extra at the start than surprise you partway through the job.

Common Questions
Do I have to replace the gutters at the same time?
No, but they must come down for the fascia to be changed. Sound ones can go back up. We check them on site and tell you which option suits your house. If you are unsure, ask us and we will explain it plainly.
Can you fit gutters in a different colour from the fascia?
Usually yes. UPVC gutters come in several finishes, and some owners match them to the fascia while others choose a contrasting colour. We go through the options with you before ordering. If you are unsure, ask us and we will explain it plainly.
What if the downpipes are blocked or leaking?
We check downpipes at the same time and clear or replace them. A new gutter feeding a blocked pipe would simply overflow, so the whole drainage run needs to work. If you are unsure, ask us and we will explain it plainly.
