UPVC Soffit and Fascia Advice — Tonypandy

What Does Replacing Fascias and Soffits on a House in Tonypandy Involve?

On a Rhondda terrace the work follows the same steps as anywhere, but access, shared eaves lines and weather need extra thought. Here is how a fascia and soffit replacement runs in Tonypandy.

UPVC Soffit and Fascia › Tonypandy › Guide

Tonypandy's terraces were built tightly in the late 1800s and climb the hillsides in long rows, with eaves that often run unbroken from one house to the next. That shapes how we plan a fascia and soffit job. This guide walks through the stages, from talking to neighbours and setting up access to fitting the boards and finishing the gutters.

Planning around a shared row

On a terrace, the roofline is rarely just your house. Eaves, gutters and sometimes boards run across the party line, so we look at where your work stops and the neighbour's begins. We explain how we will tie new boards neatly into the next house, and suggest you have a word with neighbours before the scaffold goes up. It is easier when everyone knows what is happening.

Getting access on steep streets

Rhondda streets can be steep and narrow, with limited room on the pavement and sometimes a rear lane at a different level. Scaffold or similar access has to be set safely on sloping ground. We look at the street, the pavement width and the back before agreeing a plan. If the ground is awkward, access takes longer to set up, and we would rather do that properly than rush it.

Taking off the old and checking behind

Gutters come down first, then the old fascias, soffits and bargeboards. Terrace timbers that have been damp for a long time can be soft, and we take care as they come off. On older homes we check what the existing soffit boards are made of before they are disturbed. With the boards off, we inspect the rafter ends and eaves, and deal with damp or rotten timber before anything new is fixed.

  • Gutters taken down first on site
  • Old boards removed carefully on site
  • Rafter ends and eaves checked
  • Damp timber sorted before new boards go on

Fitting new UPVC boards

New fascias are fixed along the rafter ends, soffits go underneath, and bargeboards are fitted on any exposed gable edge, usually at the end of a row. Joints are kept tight and corners set neatly. Vented soffits or vent strips go in so the roof space can breathe, which helps old terrace lofts where air has been shut out for a long time. UPVC is cleaned, not painted, and comes in white or darker and wood-effect finishes.

Gutters, tidy up and handover

Gutters and downpipes are refitted or replaced and the fall is checked by running water through. Hillside rain arrives hard, so the connections matter. Then the access comes down and the site is cleared. The work may need planning or Building Regulations checks — we advise before work starts. We talk you through what we found behind the old boards, and what, if anything, needs watching.

  • Fall checked with water run through
  • Downpipe connections tested on site
  • Access removed and site cleared
  • Findings explained to you on site

Common Questions

Do I need my neighbour's permission?

We do not need a neighbour's sign-off to work on your own boards, but where a board or gutter is shared we explain the position first and it is polite to tell them.

What if the rafter ends are rotten?

We show you and explain the options. Sound timber can often be repaired or strengthened, and badly decayed ends may need more work. We tell you before going ahead. If you are unsure, ask us and we will explain it plainly.

Can the work be done in the rain?

Light work can go on in drizzle, but heavy rain or strong wind on a hillside makes working at height unsafe, so we wait. A dry spell gives a better job. If you are unsure, ask us and we will explain it plainly.
