Chimney Repairs South Wales › Caerphilly › Guide
Exposed to wind and rain off the valley edge, chimney stacks in Caerphilly can lean, split or shed bricks. A rebuild sounds drastic, but it is usually the correct fix once the brick and mortar have failed. Here is what to look for and what the rebuild involves. Knowing the signs early can save a larger repair later.
Signs a stack is failing
From the pavement or garden you can often see a stack that no longer sits square on the ridge. Look at it only from the ground and never climb up to check. Cracks that run through several courses, bricks with flaking faces and mortar that has washed out are the common signs. If you see any of these, call us rather than waiting for the next storm.
- A visible lean against the line of the roof
- Diagonal or stepped cracks through the brickwork
- Brick faces that have flaked or crumbled
- Pots that look tilted or sit loose
- Debris or brick fragments on the ground below
Why they lean and crack here
Persistent rain soaks the upper courses, and frost then expands the water inside the brick. On the windward side of a stack the mortar goes first, so the stack slowly bends away from the weather. On older terraces the stack may also have been built on a breast or wall that has moved over the decades. Older stacks that have moved are the ones we most often rebuild, because the damage tends to run deeper than it looks from the ground.
What we check from the loft and rooms
Inside, we look at the breast and the loft timbers around the stack for damp staining, soft timber or signs of the stack settling. A stack that is cracked above the roofline may be sound below, and the loft inspection tells us where the good work stops.
How a rebuild is carried out
We scaffold the stack, make it safe, and take it down to sound brickwork, usually just above the roofline or lower if the problem runs deeper. It is then rebuilt in matching brick or stone with a fresh mortar mix, a damp-proof layer where needed, and new pots, flaunching and capping.
Flashing and repointing have their own pages, so we mention them here only where they affect the rebuild. Taking the stack down only as far as the sound work keeps the original character of the roof. We explain each step plainly before we start.
What to ask and what to expect
Ask whether the quotation covers scaffolding, pots and capping, and how the roof will be made good. We give a free, no-obligation quotation and explain whether repair or full rebuild is the honest option. If you share the stack with next door, we speak to your neighbours about access.

Common Questions
Is a leaning chimney stack dangerous?
It can be, because a stack that has moved may shed bricks in a storm. Keep clear of the area below it and call us for a proper look. Please do not climb up or try to push or prop it yourself.
Can a cracked stack be repaired without a full rebuild?
Sometimes, if the cracking is limited to a few courses and the rest is sound. If the brickwork is soft or the lean is noticeable, rebuilding the top section is usually the lasting answer. We tell you which after inspecting.
Will the rebuilt stack match my house?
We match brick or stone colour and size as closely as we can, and keep the original height and pot arrangement unless you want it changed. On terraces we aim for the stack to sit naturally with its neighbours.
