Chimney Repairs South Wales › Tonypandy
Tonypandy is a town of long terraces stepping up the valley side, most of them built in the late 1800s. Almost every house has a chimney stack standing proud of the ridge, and many of those stacks have been taking wind, rain and frost off the hillside for well over a century.
We are a Port Talbot-based roofing firm and we work across the Rhondda, from Penygraig and Trealaw to Llwynypia and Clydach Vale. If a stack is leaning, shedding brick, dripping water into a bedroom or simply looks tired from the street, we will take a proper look and tell you plainly what it needs.

Why Tonypandy chimneys wear out

The terraces here were built tight and built to a budget. Chimneys were often put up in pairs or fours along the party walls, so one stack can serve the houses either side of it. That makes them tall, narrow and heavily loaded at the top, with the weight carried on a wall shared between neighbours.
The valley sides funnel weather straight at them. Rain driven up the hill, wind rolling over the ridge and long wet spells followed by hard frost all work on the old brick and lime mortar. Water gets into the joints, freezes, and slowly pushes the courses apart until the top few rows go loose.
Many stacks have also lost their original pots, hoods or flaunching over the decades, or been patched with a quick lick of cement that traps moisture instead of letting it out. A stack that was once sound can lean or crack gradually, and it is usually the neighbours or the postman who notice before the owner does.
Chimney work we carry out in Tonypandy
- Full chimney rebuilds — Where brickwork has gone beyond patching, we take the stack down to sound masonry and rebuild it with matching brick or stone, keeping the look of the terrace.
- Stack removal and reduction — We can take a redundant stack down below the roof line or reduce its height, after assessing support, the neighbours' side and what Building Regulations may require.
- Pots and cowls — Cracked, loose or missing pots are replaced and bedded securely, and cowls fitted where a flue needs protection from rain, birds and downdraught off the hillside.
- Capping and flaunching — The mortar crown that holds the pots and sheds water is renewed, or a cap fitted over a disused flue, so rain stops getting into the top of the stack.
- Leaks traced to the stack — Damp patches on a chimney breast or ceiling often start at the stack. We trace where water is entering and repair that point rather than just covering the stain.
- Damaged or leaning stacks — Cracked, bulging or leaning stacks are made safe, then repaired or rebuilt, depending on what we find once we can see the condition of the brick and mortar.

Access, scaffold and neighbours

Working at the top of a tall stack on a steep street needs proper access. Most chimney jobs here call for scaffold, and on a sloping terrace that means thinking about the pavement, the gradient and where materials can safely be stored. We plan this at the quotation stage so nothing is a surprise.
Because so many stacks are shared, we will talk to your neighbours about access and timing. Who pays for a shared stack, and how that is split, is for the owners to agree between themselves. From the ground or the loft you can look for damp stains or fallen debris, but please leave the roof and stack to us and call for a proper look.

Chimney Repairs in Tonypandy — Common Questions
Can you repair a chimney stack shared with my neighbour in Tonypandy?
Yes. Most terraces here share stacks along the party wall, so we look at the whole stack and speak to the neighbour about access. How the cost is divided is for the owners to agree between themselves; we simply explain what the work involves.
How do I know if my chimney stack needs rebuilding rather than repair?
From the street, look for leaning, cracks, missing brick or loose pots. Inside, damp on the chimney breast is another sign. We then inspect the stack closely and tell you whether patching will hold or whether rebuilding is the sounder option.
Will you need scaffold on a steep Rhondda street?
Usually, yes. A tall stack on a sloping terrace is not safe to work from a ladder. We assess the pavement, the gradient and neighbouring access first, then arrange scaffold to suit the street and explain it in the quotation.
Can you remove a chimney stack I no longer use?
Often we can, but we assess first. Support for the stack, the shared wall and Building Regulations or planning checks may apply, and we advise before any work starts. If a stove is planned later, that needs a suitably qualified installer.
Do you cover Penygraig, Trealaw and Clydach Vale as well?
Yes. We work throughout the Rhondda, including Penygraig, Trealaw, Llwynypia, Clydach Vale, Pentre, Ystrad, Treorchy, Ferndale and Porth. Call us and we will arrange a time to look at the stack, with a free, no-obligation quotation.
