Chimney Repairs South Wales › Cardiff

Cardiff has a lot of chimneys, and most of them are older than the people living under them. Long Victorian and Edwardian terraces run through Cathays, Roath, Canton and Grangetown, and nearly every roof carries a row of brick stacks that have taken a century of Atlantic weather.

We are a South Wales roofing firm and chimney work is a regular part of our week in the city. Some jobs are a cracked pot or a loose cap. Others are a full rebuild from the roofline up. Either way we look first, tell you what is actually wrong, and quote for that.

The chimneys on Cardiff houses and why they fail

The classic Cardiff terrace has a stack straddling the party wall, serving fireplaces in two houses at once. Cathays, Splott, Canton and Grangetown are full of them. Bricks at the top sit exposed on all sides, and the mortar between them has often been rained on for well over a hundred years.

Villas in Pontcanna, Llandaff and Roath tend to have taller, more decorative stacks with several pots, corbelled brickwork and sometimes a coat of render. Render hides trouble well. Water gets behind a hairline crack, freezes and lifts the surface off in sheets, and the first sign is often pieces of it turning up in the garden or on the path below.

The 1930s semis of Heath, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Cyncoed usually have a single squat stack on the side wall. These are younger but often poorly capped, and many have lost a pot or a cowl over the years. Wind and rain coming up the Bristol Channel does the rest, particularly on the exposed higher ground.

Chimney work we carry out in Cardiff

  • Stack rebuilds — Taking a failing stack down to sound brickwork and rebuilding it to match, with new flaunching and pots, so the chimney is sound again from the roofline up.
  • Stack removal and reduction — Taking a redundant stack down below the roof slope or lowering it, after we have assessed the structure, with the roof made good and watertight afterwards.
  • Pots and cowls — Replacing cracked, loose or missing chimney pots, and fitting cowls where downdraught or rain coming down an open flue has been a problem.
  • Capping and flaunching — Renewing the mortar bed that holds the pots and sheds water, or capping off a stack that is no longer in use, with the flue ventilated.
  • Leaks traced to the stack — Finding out whether a stain on a ceiling or chimney breast is coming from the stack itself, and putting right whatever the fault turns out to be.
  • Damaged or leaning stacks — Assessing stacks that have cracked, bowed or started to lean, and making them safe by propping, partial taking down or a full rebuild.

Access, scaffolding and neighbours

Most chimney work in Cardiff needs scaffold, and terraced streets make that harder than it sounds. Pavements are narrow, cars are parked nose to tail, and the stack often sits over next door's roof. We plan the access before the day, and where a licence or a parking bay is needed we say so up front.

If your stack is shared, we talk to the neighbours about access and timing. Who pays and how the cost is split is for the two owners to agree between you; we do not give legal advice on that. From the ground, look for stained walls or fallen mortar, but please do not climb up to check, and call us for a proper look.

Chimney Repairs in Cardiff — Common Questions

Do you repair shared chimney stacks on Cardiff terraces?

Yes. Most terraced streets in Cathays, Canton, Roath and Splott have stacks serving two houses. We need access from both sides, so we speak to your neighbour about scaffold and timing. How the bill is divided is for the owners to agree between themselves.

Can you remove a chimney stack I no longer use?

Often, yes, but we assess it first. Taking out or reducing a stack can affect support to the breast below, and Building Regulations or planning checks may apply. We advise on all of that before any work starts, then make the roof good afterwards.

My chimney is leaning. Is it dangerous?

It can be. A visible lean or a crack running across the brickwork means the stack may be unstable, especially in a gale. Keep clear of the area below it and call us for a proper look. Please do not climb up to inspect it.

Is the damp patch on my chimney breast coming from the stack?

Sometimes. Failed flaunching, a cracked pot or open brickwork at the top can let rain run down inside the flue. Salts and condensation cause similar patches too, so we check the stack, the flashing and the flue before giving you a view.

Can you fit a stove or put a liner in a Cardiff chimney?

We repair and rebuild the stack so it is sound. A stove or appliance installation is for a suitably qualified installer, and we do not certify appliances. Once your installer has what they need, we can sort the stack, pot and cowl.
