Chimney Advice — Cwmbran

Should an Unused Chimney Be Capped or Ventilated in Cwmbran?

Plenty of Cwmbran houses have a fireplace that was blocked up when the heating changed. Sealing a flue completely can cause its own damp, so here is how capping and ventilation work together.

Usually both, and that surprises people. Rain should be kept out of an unused flue, but the flue still needs a little air moving through it to stay dry. A solid seal at the top and a blocked opening at the bottom often leave a damp, stale chimney that shows itself as stains on the breast inside.

Why an unused flue still needs air

Warm, moist air from the house finds its way into a flue even when the fire has gone. If that air cannot escape, it condenses on the cold brickwork and the moisture soaks into the chimney breast. A flue that can breathe stays far drier. That is why a plain slab laid over the pot is rarely the right answer.

What a vented cap does

A vented cap or a rain cowl sits over the top of the pot or stack. It stops rain and birds getting in but leaves a gap for air to move. Fitted over a sound pot on a solid mortar bed, it protects the flue without sealing it. We advise on the right type once we have looked at the stack.

  • Keeps rain, leaves and nesting birds out of the flue.
  • Lets air pass so the flue can dry.
  • Sits on a repaired mortar bed rather than loose pots.
  • Is chosen to suit the pot and stack.

Ventilating the flue lower down

Where the fireplace opening has been blocked, a small vent in the blocking, often a ceramic or metal grille, lets the flue draw air from the room. This is common in the post-war houses around Cwmbran. We check what is already in place, as a vent may be missing, painted over or blocked by debris.

Things to avoid

Do not light a fire or use an appliance on a flue that has not been inspected. If a boiler, gas fire or other appliance is connected to any flue, a suitably qualified installer must check it before it is used again. We repair stacks and fit pots and caps, but we do not certify appliances.

  • Bricking up both ends with no air path at all.
  • Leaving a loose slab over the pot.
  • Assuming a cap fixes damp that is already inside the breast.

What we check from the ground and the loft

From the pavement we look for a missing pot, a cracked mortar bed or a stack that leans. In the loft we look at the back of the breast for damp, staining or loose debris. A closer look is done from scaffold, never by guesswork from below, and we then explain what is needed in plain terms.

Common Questions

Is it enough to just cap the top?

Not always. A cap keeps rain out, but if the flue is also sealed at the bottom, damp air has nowhere to go. A vented cap, and a vent low down where the fireplace was blocked, usually gives the best result.

Can I fit a cap myself?

No. Fitting one means working at the top of the stack, which is dangerous without scaffold. Check from the ground and the loft, then call us for a proper look and we will put the right cap on safely.

Will a cap cure the damp on my chimney breast?

It helps if rain is coming down the flue, but damp can have other causes, such as the mortar bed or the roof junction. We find the actual source before recommending a cap, so you are not paying for the wrong fix.
