How Do You Rebuild a Leaning or Cracked Chimney Stack in Maesteg?

A leaning or cracked stack on a Maesteg terrace is rarely a quick patch. Here is how we decide between repair and rebuild, and what the work actually involves.

Chimney Repairs South Wales › Maesteg › Guide

Chimney stacks in Maesteg face wind and rain funnelled along the Llynfi Valley, and after many winters the brickwork shows it. A stack that leans or has cracks through the brick is telling you the masonry has lost its grip. This guide explains how we decide what to do, how a rebuild is carried out and what to ask before agreeing to it.

What a lean or crack actually means

A stack leans when the mortar on one side has washed out or the bricks have loosened, so the top courses slowly move. Cracks through the bricks, rather than just the joints, suggest movement or water and frost damage inside the brick itself. Either way the weight at the top is no longer held firmly, and a strong gust can finish the job.

What we check before deciding

From the ground we look at the angle of the stack against the ridge and whether pots or brickwork are loose. From inside we check the loft and the chimney breast for damp, staining or movement. If the stack needs a closer look, we inspect it up close and tell you plainly whether a repair will hold or a rebuild is the safer route.

  • Angle of the stack against the roof line
  • Loose, cracked or missing pots and flaunching
  • Soft or washed-out mortar and flaking bricks
  • Damp or staining in the loft and on the chimney breast

How a rebuild is carried out

Once scaffold is up, we take the stack down course by course to sound brickwork, setting aside any bricks that can be reused. Damaged ones are replaced with a close match. The stack is then rebuilt with a proper mortar mix, sitting on a firm base, with the lines checked as it rises so it finishes plumb.

Flues are kept clear and lined up with the pots, and a new bed of flaunching is laid around them so rain sheds off. Where the roof meets the stack, the flashing is a separate job with its own method, and we talk you through it if it needs attention. Loose debris is cleared from the roof and the area below before we leave.

When a repair is enough

If the stack is sound and the damage is limited to a few failed joints or a cracked flaunching, a repair may be all it needs. We would rather tell you that than rebuild a stack that does not need it. A stack that has moved as a whole, or has brick breaking up, is a different matter.

What to ask before work starts

Ask what will be reused and what replaced, how the area below will be kept safe, and who arranges the scaffold. If a chimney breast or flue is being altered, ask about structural support and Building Regulations checks. We cover these at the quotation, which is free and carries no obligation.

Common Questions

Can a leaning stack just be straightened?

Not safely. A leaning stack has loose or failed masonry, and nudging it upright does not cure that. The sound approach is to take it down to good brickwork and rebuild. Keep people clear of the area below it until we have had a proper look.

Will the new stack match the old one on my terrace?

We aim to match brick, bond and height as closely as we can so it sits right with the neighbouring stacks along the row. Perfect colour matches are not always possible on old brick, and we will say so before starting.

Do I need to be at home during a rebuild?

Not usually for the roof work itself, but we do need clear access to the front or back of the house for scaffold, and sometimes to the loft or chimney breast. We agree this beforehand so the job runs smoothly and you know when to expect us.
