How Do You Rebuild a Leaning or Cracked Chimney Stack in Tonypandy?

A leaning or cracked stack on a Rhondda terrace should be looked at promptly. This guide covers the warning signs, what we inspect, and how a stack is taken down and rebuilt.

Stacks on the older Tonypandy terraces have stood on hillside exposure for well over a century, and some of them show it. A stack that leans or has cracks running through the brick is telling you something. Here is what causes it, what we check, and how a rebuild is carried out.

Why stacks lean and crack

Rain gets into old lime mortar, freezes in cold snaps and slowly opens the joints. The top of the stack, which takes the full force of the wind, loosens first, and the whole column can start to move. Weak or failed flaunching, a cracked pot, or years of cement patching that traps moisture inside the brick all speed this up. On a shared stack, movement in one house can show up next door.

What you can spot from the ground

Stand back across the street and look along the line of the stack. A lean, a bulge, a gap at the roof line or bricks that look out of square are all reasons to call us. Inside, a damp chimney breast, flaking paint or soot falling into the fireplace may point to trouble higher up. Do not use the flue if you suspect a fault, and do not climb up to check.

  • Visible lean or bulge along the line
  • Wide cracks or missing bricks at the top
  • Loose or tilted pots on the stack
  • Damp or sooting on the chimney breast

What we inspect before deciding

We examine the stack closely from a safe working position, checking the condition of the brick, the mortar, the pots and the flaunching. We also look at how the stack meets the roof and what is holding it up below. Then we explain whether the top courses can be rebuilt or whether the whole stack needs to come down. You get that in plain terms with a free, no-obligation quotation.

How the rebuild is done

The stack is taken down course by course to sound masonry, with debris contained and lowered safely. The brick that is reusable is cleaned and set aside, and new matching brick is added where needed. It is then rebuilt on a fresh mortar bed, with flues kept clear and the pots set firmly. A new mortar crown, properly shaped to shed water, finishes the stack.

Questions to ask before work starts

Ask how far down the stack will be taken, and what happens if the brick below turns out to be worse than it looked. Ask about scaffold, neighbours and how the work will be tidied up. If a chimney is also to be reduced or serve a stove later, tell us first. We assess structural support and Building Regulations checks and advise before work starts.

Common Questions

Is a leaning chimney dangerous?

It can be, as a stack that is moving may drop brick or pots onto the roof or pavement. Keep away from underneath it and do not use the flue. Call us and we will look at it and explain what is needed. Safety comes first.

Can a cracked stack be repaired without rebuilding?

Sometimes. If the damage is confined to the top courses or the mortar, we can rebuild those only. If the cracks run deep or the stack is moving, a fuller rebuild is the sounder option, and we explain which applies.

Will the rebuilt stack match the others on the terrace?

We aim to match the brick, height and style of the neighbouring stacks so the terrace still looks right. Matching is as close as practical, and we talk it through with you before the work begins.
