How Does Sea Air Damage Chimney Stacks in Barry?

Living near the Bristol Channel is good for the walks and hard on the brickwork. Here is what salt wind actually does to a chimney stack, what you can see from the ground, and what we do about it.

Chimney Repairs South Wales › Barry › Guide

A chimney stack stands higher than anything else on the house, so it meets the wind first. In Barry that wind often comes off the Channel carrying salt and rain. Over many winters it works into brick and mortar, loosens the joints and leaves the stack weaker than it looks from the street.

What salt does to brick and mortar

Salt that lands on a stack is drawn into the brick and the mortar joints when they get wet. When the masonry dries, the salt crystallises inside the surface and pushes it apart a little. Repeated over many seasons, faces flake and joints turn sandy and hollow. Edwardian stacks with soft lime mortar suffer first at the joints, which is partly what they were designed to do, since mortar is meant to wear before the brick. The trouble starts when no one renews it.

Signs you can see from the ground

You do not need to go near the roof. Stand across the road, or in the garden, and look up at the stack, ideally with binoculars on a clear day. Look at the windward face first, which is usually the side facing the sea, and compare it with the sheltered side to see how much the weather has taken.

  • White powdery staining or flaking brick faces on the windward side
  • Mortar missing or recessed deep between the bricks
  • Pots that lean, or a stack that looks bent against the skyline
  • Plant growth or moss sitting in the top of the stack
  • Brick or mortar fragments in the gutter or on the ground below

Which parts of the stack go first

The top gets the worst of it. The mortar bed around the pots, known as flaunching, and the capping take direct rain and wind, and once they crack, water runs down inside the stack instead of off it. Pots wear too. Salt and frost can split clay, and a cracked pot can shed pieces onto the roof or the pavement. These are the first items we look at on a coastal stack.

What a repair involves

If the damage is limited to the top, we renew the flaunching and capping and replace any pots that have failed. If the brickwork is loose or crumbling lower down, the sound option is to take the affected section down and rebuild it. We use a mortar mix that suits the age of the brick, because a mix that is too hard can damage old soft brick. Work is done from scaffold or a tower, never by guesswork from a ladder.

Making a stack last on the coast

No chimney is immune to the sea, but a sound, well-bedded stack with a good capping and sound pots will cope much better than one left to decay. Looking at it every so often from the ground and acting on early signs is far less trouble than a rebuild after a storm. If you spot any of the signs above, ring us and we will arrange a proper look and a free quotation.

Common Questions

Is sea air really that much worse for a chimney than inland air?

Yes, in practice. Salt in the wind keeps brick and mortar damp and breaks surfaces down as it crystallises. Add the extra wind exposure on the Bristol Channel coast and stacks here generally need attention sooner than sheltered inland ones.

Can I paint or seal the stack to stop salt damage?

We would not recommend sealing old brick, because trapped moisture can do more harm. The better answer is sound mortar, good capping and sound pots. Ring us for a look before spending anything on coatings.

How do I know if the damage is serious?

Leaning, a visible bulge, large missing areas of mortar or falling debris all mean it needs a proper assessment soon. Keep clear of the area below and call us so we can make it safe and advise.
