Chimney Repairs South Wales › Barry › Guide
Damp on or beside a chimney breast is one of the commonest calls we get. The water may come from the top of the stack, from the junction with the roof, or from inside the flue itself. In Barry, where rain arrives sideways off the Channel, it often has more than one way in.
The usual causes
Water gets down a chimney in a handful of ways. The pot or capping may be cracked, the brickwork may have open joints that soak up rain, or the weatherproofing where the stack meets the roof may have failed. Older flues can also hold moisture that shows up as brown staining, particularly where a fireplace has been closed off and the stack no longer gets any warmth or air through it.
What you can check from inside
Everything here is done from floor level or the loft hatch. Please do not go onto the roof, and do not light a fire or use the appliance if you think the flue has a fault. Stay well back from the fireplace opening if soot or loose debris is coming down.
- Note whether the patch gets worse after wind-driven rain
- Look for brown rings, flaking paint or a salty white bloom
- From the loft hatch, look for wet timber or stained brickwork
- Check whether it appears on the room above as well
- Take dated photos to show us when we visit
Why timing matters
If the stain shows only after heavy rain from one direction, the source is probably on that face of the stack or the roof junction. If it is constant, the cause may be a blocked or cold flue holding moisture. Tell us when it appears. This often narrows the search before we have even set up. A patch that appears only after a particular wind direction points to one face of the stack, while a patch that never dries suggests a flue that is staying cold and wet.
How we trace and fix it
We inspect the stack from scaffold or a safe position, checking the pots, capping, brickwork and roof junction in turn. Where it is hard to tell, we look at the loft side as well and work out where the water enters. The repair follows the finding. It might be new flaunching, a replaced pot, repair to the brickwork, or a rebuild. We do not guess, and we tell you what we find before work starts.
Drying out and what to expect after
Once the water has been stopped, the wall needs time to dry. Do not repaint straight away, or the damp will push through the new finish and peel it. Salt marks may keep reappearing for a while on an older breast. If a stain returns once the wall has dried, call us back and we will look again. Give it plenty of time, particularly in winter when the house is cool and the wall dries slowly.

Common Questions
Could the damp be from the roof and not the chimney?
It could, since slates, valleys and flashings all sit near the stack. That is why we trace the source rather than assume. We check the stack first and look at the nearby roof, then tell you plainly what we find.
Is damp by a chimney breast dangerous?
Usually it is a nuisance rather than a danger, but it can rot timber near the stack if left. If a flue has a fault, do not use it. Ring us for a proper look before the problem spreads.
Should I redecorate the damp patch now?
Wait. Paint over a wall that is still wet will blister and the stain will come back through. Get the cause fixed first, let the wall dry fully, then redecorate it. Ring us if it stays damp.
