How Do You Rebuild a Leaning or Cracked Chimney Stack in Pontypridd?

A leaning or cracked stack on a Pontypridd house is rarely something to leave. This guide explains how we judge the damage, take the stack down safely and rebuild it so it stands true.

Valley wind and driving rain loosen chimney stacks over time, and Pontypridd's exposed hillsides see plenty of both. A stack that leans, has cracked brickwork or drops mortar needs a proper assessment. Here is how we decide between a repair and a rebuild, and what a rebuild involves.

Signs a stack has gone wrong

From the ground you may see a lean against the sky, a visible crack running through the brickwork, or pots sitting at an odd angle. Inside, you may find fallen soot, loose debris in the fireplace or damp on the chimney breast. None of these should be tested by climbing up. They are reasons to call us for a proper look. Strong wind or a hard frost can turn a small fault into a bigger one quickly.

  • Open cracks through brick and mortar
  • Bricks, mortar or pot fragments in the garden
  • Pots tilted, loose or missing

How we assess it

We inspect from a safe working platform, checking each course, the joints, the pots and the flaunching, and we look at the loft to see how the stack is supported and whether water has been getting in. The aim is to find where sound brickwork stops. That decides whether a repair is enough or the section above needs to come down. A written note of what we find helps you decide with the facts in front of you.

Taking the stack down

A rebuild begins by taking down the loose section, course by course, working from the top. Brick, mortar and debris are lowered or chuted down in a controlled way, not dropped. We stop when we reach firm, well-bonded brickwork. Anything below that has held can often stay, which keeps the job proportionate. Pots and sound bricks are kept aside for reuse where they are fit for it.

Rebuilding and finishing

The new courses are laid on a suitable mortar mix, keeping the stack square and plumb. Reusable brick goes back, with matching brick filling any gaps. Pots are bedded and the flaunching formed, then a sloped capping sheds water away. If the stack is shared with a neighbour, the rebuild covers the whole stack and we speak to them about access. Costs are for the owners to agree. We tidy the area and clear the waste when the work is complete.

Reduction or removal as an alternative

Some owners prefer to take the stack down lower, or remove it altogether, once a flue is no longer used. We assess that first, because the chimney breast may need support, and Building Regulations or planning checks may apply. We advise on all of that before work starts. Any stove or appliance fitting is a job for a suitably qualified installer. Where a stack is only removed partway, the remaining top is sealed and made weathertight.

Common Questions

Is a leaning stack dangerous?

It can be, because bricks and pots may fall in strong wind. Keep people clear of the area below, do not use any fire or flue connected to it, and call us. We will inspect it and advise on making it safe.

Can a cracked stack be repaired without rebuilding?

Sometimes, when the crack is limited to the mortar and the brick is sound. Where the crack runs through brick or the stack has moved, rebuilding the upper section is the lasting option. We explain which applies after inspecting it.

How long does a chimney rebuild take?

Most rebuilds are a short job once the scaffold is up, though it depends on the height, the number of flues and the weather. We give you a realistic picture when we quote, and keep you updated if conditions slow us.
