Why Is There a Damp Patch by the Chimney Breast in Pontypridd?

A damp patch on or beside a chimney breast is common in Pontypridd's older terraces. It has several possible causes, and the stack is only one of them. Here is how we narrow it down.

A brown stain or a patch of cold, damp wall next to a chimney breast is a familiar sight in older Pontypridd houses. Wet weather from the valley makes it show up quickly. Finding the real cause matters, because repainting over the mark will not stop water getting in.

Where the water usually comes from

Water can enter at the top of the stack through cracked capping or open joints, run down the inside of the flue and soak the breast. It can also come in where the stack meets the roof, or from a blocked or damaged gutter nearby. The patch may show well below the real source, because water travels along masonry before it appears. Old lime mortar and soft brick make this more likely on houses of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

What you can check without going up

From inside, look at the breast in the room and the loft side of the stack, using a torch and standing on a safe floor or proper loft boards. From the ground, look for broken pots, missing bricks or overflowing guttering. If you can see the problem, make a note of it and call us. Do not climb onto the roof or the stack. A photo from the ground taken with the zoom on your phone is useful to share with us.

  • Damp that grows after heavy or driving rain
  • Staining that follows the line of the chimney breast
  • Loose or powdery plaster near the chimney
  • Sooty or brown tide marks in the loft

Rain or condensation

Not every damp patch is a leak. An unused flue with no ventilation can hold moisture that condenses on a cold wall, and salts from old soot can pull dampness out of the plaster even when the stack is dry. That is why we look at the whole picture first. If the stack is sound, we tell you, rather than selling you work you do not need. Marks that appear in dry spells often point to condensation or salts instead.

How we trace and fix it

We inspect the stack from a safe platform, checking the capping, flaunching, pots and joints, then the roof around the base and the loft below. Once we find the entry point, we repair that, whether it is renewed capping, a reset pot or a section of rebuild. Flashing and repointing have their own pages on this site, and we mention them here only when they are the cause. We then explain what we found in plain terms before any repair is agreed.

Drying out afterwards

After the source is fixed, the wall needs time to dry. Allow the breast to dry before replastering or redecorating, or the stain returns. We will tell you if we think a second trade, such as a plasterer, is needed. A sealed or capped flue may also need ventilation advice, which we raise at the time. Patience at this stage saves repeating the decorating later.

Common Questions

Is a damp chimney breast always caused by the stack?

No. Condensation, a blocked gutter or rising damp can all cause similar marks. We look at the stack, the roof edges and the loft together, so we only recommend work that matches the real cause.

Should I light the fire to dry the wall out?

No. If you suspect a fault in the stack or flue, do not light or use it until the chimney has been checked. Call us first, and we will look at the stack and advise on what comes next.

How soon should I get a damp patch looked at?

As soon as you can. Water running down a stack keeps soaking the masonry and can damage plaster and timber in the loft. A quick inspection usually shows whether the stack is the cause and what repair is needed.
